Understanding Fragrance Concentrations: Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and Cologne
When selecting a fragrance, understanding the concentration of aromatic compounds is key to choosing the right intensity and longevity for your lifestyle and preferences. Here’s a guide to the differences between the main types:
Parfum (Extrait de Parfum)
Parfum is the most concentrated form of fragrance, containing 20–30% aromatic compounds. This results in a rich, long-lasting scent that can linger on the skin for 8 hours or more. Often considered the most luxurious formulation, Parfum is perfect for those who desire depth, complexity, and enduring presence.
Eau de Parfum (EDP)
Eau de Parfum strikes a refined balance between strength and subtlety, typically featuring 15–20% fragrance concentration. It offers a lasting scent that usually endures for 6 to 8 hours, making it ideal for daily wear while maintaining a sense of sophistication and character.
Eau de Toilette (EDT)
Lighter and more refreshing, Eau de Toilette contains around 5–15% fragrance concentration. It offers a more subtle scent experience, lasting approximately 3 to 5 hours. EDTs are often crisp and vibrant, making them well-suited for daytime use or warmer climates.
Cologne (Eau de Cologne)
Traditionally associated with masculine scents, cologne features the lowest concentration of fragrance—typically 2–5%. Its airy and invigorating character makes it perfect for a quick refresh or for layering throughout the day. Expect a light scent trail that lasts 1 to 3 hours.
